Abstract : The fluid mechanical aspects of radial supersonic flow lasers are discussed and various design constraints applying to these lasers are analyzed. Estimates are presented which indicate the circumstances under which radial supersonic nozzle and laser optical cavity flow fields are expected to differ significantly from corresponding linear flow fields. Supersonic nozzle shapes are expected to be influenced by radial flow when the radius at the nozzle exit is less than about four times the height of an individual nozzle element. The influence of radial flow upon the flow field in the laser optical cavity depends upon the laser radius, the chemical heat release in the cavity and the streamwise length of the gain region.
