Abstract : The study was undertaken to determine the cost of conforming to standard military specifications in an electronic computer system. The prices of four configurations of a minicomputer system conforming to standard military specifications (MIL-E-16400 and MIL-E-5400) were compared with those of four configurations of an equivalent minicomputer system designed for commercial use. The price differences thus derived were assumed to be the cost of conforming to standard military specifications. These differences represented 42 to 49 percent of the price of the military system considered, depending upon the configuration. (Author)
