Abstract : The objectives were to produce clinical local electroanesthesia (EA) of the extremities, and produce electrical spinal anesthesia in monkeys. A form of anesthesia of the hand which entailed very severe muscle spasm was produced. The anesthesia was judged to be adequate for minor surgery but not enough to offset the pain of muscle spasm of the arm above the area of anesthesia. Several hundred applications were made, using current across and/or along the nerve course and in every application muscle spasm predominated. Electrode placement, current crossings, current patterns, waveforms, frequencies, and duty cycles were studied using monkeys in a great number of current applications. The authors did not produce electrical spinal anesthesia by any pattern which did not involve a puncture of the dura. Every application produced muscle spasm.
