Abstract : A-126*Nuclear explosions, *Fallout, Wind, Radiometers, Meteorological satellitesThe Army's requirement for wind data for nuclear fallout prediction is discussed. It is shown that an approximation to the actual wind field can be made by analyzing vertical temperature profiles obtained from satellite-observed radiances. A method used to obtain a vertical wind profile from the satellite-observed radiances, the density of temperature data obtained from the satellite, errors involved in obtaining a satellite-derived wind field, and an economic analysis are briefly described. It is concluded that the Army's future requirement for wind data for nuclear fallout predictions can be satisfied by data obtained from meteorological satellites. (Author)
