Abstract : A system which uses a beam of low energy positive ions to shape and polish surfaces of optical elements has been developed at Frankford Arsenal. This system is used to form ultra-high precision optical surfaces under the direction of an on-line computer. The resultant optical surface is both highly accurate and extremely smooth. The report presents the physical theory involved in low energy ionic sputtering, together with a description of the linear positive ion accelerator developed and used for this process. Experimental results are presented, including surface microstructure morology. (Author)
