S. ;CAM-100-21N00014-67-A-0370-0001*Thermomechanics, *Thermodynamics, Continuum mechanics, Matrices(Mathematics), Differential equations, Inequalities, ReviewsThe manner in which the thermomechanics of materials with fading memory can be developed from the First and Second Laws of Thermodynamics, without using the Clausius-Duhem inequality, is outlined. It is shown how many of the results which are often claimed to be derivations from Coleman's formulation of the thermomechanics of simple materials with fading memory are, in fact, well-known classical results. Some of these results stem from the fact that the materials considered by Coleman possess instantaneous elasticity. (Author)
