Abstract : A combined theoretical and scaled laser experimental investigation has been carried out. An extensive literature survey revealed that because of various shortcomings, existing computational methods are not adequate to treat a reasonable range of problems of practical interest. Consequently, a new approach has been formulated which first computes reflection from a sinusoidal surface, then treats the random surface by Fourier synthesis. Results obtained so far suggest that, for the periodic surface, complexity and hence computer time are reduced as much as three orders of magnitude over existing methods, making feasible the subsequent Fourier synthesis step. Experimental measurements were made for a range of sample roughnesses using a 3 mW HeNe laser and were greatly facilitated by use of an integrating sphere, as well as a point probe.
