Abstract : THE INTERACTION BETWEEN A WORKLOAD AND A COMPUTER'S HARDWARE-SOFTWARE CONFIGURATION (HSC). This understanding will aid in assessing and improving the computer performance and in predicting the effects of changes in either the workload or the HSC. A test workload representative of the real workload is constructed using synthetic programs. Using this test workload, experiments are conducted on an IBM 370/155 to study the effects of external scheduling, device separation and the degree of multiprogramming. A two-server model of the computer system is presented and methods of determining the model constants using the experimental results, are suggested. Extensions of workload modeling to more dimensions and more systems and development of methods to determine experimentally the model parameters are envisaged. (Author)
