Abstract : A revision of conventional representations of acoustic fields produced by a point source in a stratified medium (seawater) is undertaken. Innovations include (a) a model of point sources based on analytic continuations of the conventional delta functions, (b) the use of this concept to evaluate mode excitation functions through a complete expansion of the source function, (c) a derivation of normal modes of propagation as field functions representing the response to individual excitation functions, (d) interpretation in terms of transmission line theory.
