Abstract : Two groups of experiments were conducted on augmenting chemical conversions by laser radiation. The authors were successful in using the stimulated raman effect (SRE) to obtain, at room temperature, substantial populations in the v=1 state in H2/D2 mixtures, and to demonstrate that in such mixtures small amounts of HD were produced. A rudimentary model for atom switching due to vibrational excitation was submitted to computer analysis and checked semiquantitatively. The second group of experiments concerned systems in which v-T relaxations were rapid, so that irradiation from a CO2 cw laser produced homogeneous heating. The pyrolysis of ammonia has been successfully completed. A laser powered homogeneous reactor (designated LPHR) is being tested. It is particularly suitable for measuring relative reaction rates, and permits estimation of relative activation energies. (Modified author abstract)
