Abstract : A number of critical applications exist for Co-rare-earth magnets which embody radial symmetry; hence, radial magnetization is of extreme importance. This work addresses the problem of producing Co5Sm shapes with radial orientation of the crystallographic 'c' axis, or easy direction of magnetization, using processing techniques adaptable to manufacturing. Three processing techniques were investigated: (1) powder die pressing in which loose powders are magnetically oriented and pressed to form a ring, which is then sintered; (2) bending at elevated temperatures, wherein pressed and magnetically aligned slabs, lightly weighted, are heated near the sintering temperature and bent in fixtures to form radial arc segments; and (3) hot mechanical working to attempt to develop a crystallographic orientation and to produce a Co5Sm tube.
