Abstract : Accurate measurements of ground velocity are important in the development and verification of computer calculations of ground motion. The measurement of velocity is of particular importance in the understanding of the mechanism by which energy of detonations is coupled into the soil and how it is transmitted through it. This report examines a few of the deficiencies of the Sandia DX velocity transducer (a mechanically integrating accelerometer) and develops the piezoresistive accelerometer in conjuction with an active integrator to overcome these deficiencies. Improved mechanical and electrical characteristics are obtained for high- and low-frequency operation. (Author)
