Abstract : Progress toward the fabrication of composites of Ni-Cr-Fe alloy reinforced with Al2O3 filaments is described The sapphire filament material was found to vary in strength with the density and distribution of microvoids. The fibers were laid up with sheets of the alloy that were grooved by a photochemical milling procedure to insure correct positioning. Consolidation of the composite by hot pressing with the matrix in the superplastic condition was demonstrated, but uniform complete consolidation was not achieved due to the limitations of the hot pressing equipment.
