Abstract : This study on the 152mm M205 Nonmetallic Cartridge Case isolates, characterizes and evaluates the interrelationships between process variables. Experimental designs are developed around the basic mechanisms of pulping, refining, wet felt forming, pressing and drying. Further experimentation and creative computer calculations, in each of the operating areas, refines the mathematical model of the process and increases the ability to predict and control the important operations of the cartridge case manufacturing process. Process operations, raw material input data and product characteristics are analyzed and their relationships to the cartridge case functions of handling strength and ballistics (resistance to residue formation) ARE ESTABLISHED. Response equations are developed empirically which permit the estimation of product characteristics. Recommendations are offered for process improvement which will increase overall quality and reliability of the M205 Nonmetallic Cartridge Case. (Author-PL)
