Abstract : Reinforced 400-gallon tanks of liquid oxygen (LOX) are airlifted to aircraft carriers during emergency resupply operations. These tanks must withstand large mechanical shock loadings during cable-arrested landings. A magnetometer system has been developed to monitor straining and metallurgical changes which result in the 304-series stainless steel inner tank wall. This change from austenite to martensite can be related to remaining fatigue life, and the tank removed from service before failure occurs. (Author)
