Abstract : The Naval Civil Engineering Laboratory is developing hydraulic power sources for underwater hydraulic tools. Hydraulic power sources driven by diesel and gasoline engines and electric motors have been successfully developed and evaluated. The operational testing was conducted by divers using hydraulic tools to work underwater. The criteria for selecting a particular hydraulic circuit and the components for an underwater hydraulic power source are different from those used for designing a hydraulic power source for surface tools. The appraisal given in the report of the relative merits of different hydraulic circuits and components is based on experience gained during NCEL's power source evaluation program.
