Abstract : The mechanisms of failure of unidirectional composites were studied under combined stresses. The effects of fiber and matrix constitutive behavior, statistics of fiber strength, and fiber-matrix interface characteristics on composite strength were studied. The salient features of lamina strength under axial tension/axial shear were determined. Examples are given for boron/epoxy and glass/epoxy. An exploratory axial shear/transverse tension/transverse shear using upper bound limit analysis techniques was performed as a means of estimating the effects of interlaminar stresses on composite failure.
