Abstract : An electron beam thermo-structural response study has been conducted to improve understanding of the response of structural elements to instantaneous in-depth heating. Six experiments were performed using the DNA SNARK electron beam generator to provide active data for the critical conditions of heating which were selected during an extensive pretest analysis. Dynamic measurements of longitudinal strain, tip displacement, and rear surface velocity history were obtained from strain gages, a high speed camera and a laser interferometer, respectively. The study has demonstrated that current electron beam accelerators may be successfully employed as radiation sources in structural response experiments. An extensive correlation study was performed in which experimental responses were compared with analytical results from existing computer codes. (Modified author abstract)
