Abstract : It is shown how the frequency, wavelength, intensity, and propagation direction of waves present in ultrasonic wave fields may be determined by light scattering experiments. The relationship between index of refraction variations and arbitrary strain fields is developed for hexagonal crystals and explicit results valid for CdS crystals are presented. (Author)
