Abstract : An experimental method for the determination of the flow state of a high intensity electron beam (CFA) moving in crossed electric and magnetic fields is considered. The fluorescence of a tracer-molecular beam (N2), as caused by inelastic collisions, is used for the determination of the electron density. It is shown that, by a choice of the 3914A line of N2 as tracer signal, the requirements for high resolution, accuracy, and freedom from probing interference can be very well satisfied. High recording speeds for 10 sec for a complete scan of the entire beam cross section still yield data accuracies and resolutions of the order of 0.01 to 0.001, if performance degradation in the optical system by mechanical vibration can be held small.
