Abstract : Effects of electrical sweeping and of 5-Mev electron irradiation on quartz resonators are described. The infrared absorption bands in the 3 micrometer range were examined, and the temperature dependence of a few lines in crystals that contained Li+, Na+ or H+ was found to give activation energies of about 0.1 ev. The currents during electrolytic diffusion at 500C was found to be almost independent on the thickness of the sample down to thicknesses of 0.05 mm. In a prolonged diffusion experiment in which K+ ions were introduced into a quartz crystal, the resonator ceased oscillating, presumably because of an uneven distribution of the K+ ions in the crystal. The effects of electron-irradiation on the Q-values and frequencies of quartz resonators were examined in various experiments, both during and after the termination of the irradiation. Preirradiation of a resonator was found to improve its behavior on further irradiations. (Author)
