Abstract : The objective of this research is to investigate the nature and mechanism of magnetic ordering at the metal-nonmetal transition. The approach is to synthesize new compounds in which the concentration of magnetic ions or conduction-band electrons could be varied independently in the neighborhood of the metal-nonmetal transition and measure magnetic parameters as a function of compound stoichiometry. Three kinds of systems were investigated: hexaborides, tungsten bronzes, and metal-ammonia compounds.
