Abstract : The response of a viscous damped, nonlinear, single-degree-of-freedom system subjected to impulsive load is studied and the effects of various parameters on the response are established. The equations of motion have been solved by use of a high-speed digital computer and an analog computer. Permanent deformation produced by acceleration pulses of various forms have been obtained and are presented in graphical form. The relationship between permanent deformation and the most significant parameters of a given pulse is shown in a three-dimensional plot which is referred to as a shock surface.
