Abstract : An investigation of the effects of multidimensional sustained stresses on polarized ferroelectric ceramics is proposed. The ceramics to be studied will be those lead zirconate titanate Types I, II, and III normally used in underwater sound transducers. Characterization of the ceramics is accomplished by measuring the elements of the piezoelectric constant tensors d and g and the dielectric constant tensor epsilon as a function of stress magnitude, dimensionality, and orientation.
