Abstract : The report deals with the hypersonic Rayleigh problem. The exact Navier-Stokes equations are used in the formulation. The perfect gas model with gamma and sigma constant ratio of specific heats and Prandtl number, respectively is assumed. The case of an insulated plate under impulsive motion at a limiting hypersonic Mach number is considered. Numerical solutions based on an explicit scheme and a Crank-Nicolson scheme have been obtained within the hypersonic viscous merged layer over the plate surface. These numerical results are compared with existing analytical and empirical results. Difficulties encountered in the numerical calculations and their remedies are briefly outlined.
