Abstract : The research investigates a threeparameter model for a hazard function that adequately describes the infant mortality and useful life regions of the bathtub curve. The corresponding timetofailure probability density function is derived and the maximum likelihood equations are developed for the three parameters. The resulting system of equations is transcendental. The NewtonRaphson Method, an iterative technique, is employed to solve this system of equations. Also, an algorithm for determining a starting solution set for the NewtonRaphson Method is discussed. Computer programs are provided for both the NewtonRaphson Method and the starting solution algorithm. (Modified author abstract)
