Abstract : A vacuum system was constructed and connected directly to an infrared spectrophotometer so that reactant and product gases could be monitored as reactions proceed. The reactions studied involved cyanogen chloride gas, and solids as isolated from ASC Whetlerite solutions under a variety of experimental conditions in addition to ASC and other types of impregnated activated carbons. All of the hydrolysis and thermal decomposition products of ASC solutions have been isolated and characterized. The persistent yellow green type of copper chromate has been found to be isomorphous with brochantite, a basic copper sulphate mineral. The gaseous reaction products in all cases were either one or both of carbon dioxide and isocyanic acid. Molecular Sieves have been impregnated with dilute ASC solutions and some moderate degree of success obtained with cyanogen chloride uptake and reactivity. A chemical model with filter element is suggested using a mixture of brochantite-chromate; cobaltous nitrate hexahydrate; and a selective CO2 absorber. (Modified author abstract)
