Abstract : The paper reviews some of the important similarities between vision and audition, especially as regards the electrical activities of the sense organs and the manner of their response to the intensity of the stimulus. It is demonstrated that subjective brightness and subjective loudness are similar functions of stimulus intensity. In fact, they are both proportional approximately to the cube root of the physical energy of the stimulus. Furthermore, the variations in the growth of loudness, known as auditory recruitment, have their parallel in vision. Four distinguishable classes of recruitment occur in both the eye and the ear.
