Abstract : A system to measure laser beam wander and beam spread in the atmosphere over the ocean has been designed, constructed, and tested. The apparatus employed a high resolution scanning telescope with a potential for use in a broad range of visual and infra-red wavelengths, and with the ability to measure beam wander and beam spread variations on the order of a few microradians in angle of incidence. Three successful trials with a propagation path over the southern end of Monterey Bay were conducted. Data was processed using analog and digital computers. RMS values of beam wander from 4.6 to 30.2 microradians were observed. (Author)
