Abstract : A variety of nuclear species can now be measured by 4 pi (beta)(gamma)coincidence methods making use of extrapolation procedures, but without requiring detailed knowledge of decay scheme parameters. By varying the betadetector efficiency an experimental function is obtained giving the betachannel counting rate in terms of the coincidencetogammachannel counting ratio, (N sub c)/(N sub gamma). This function is taken to give the source disintegration rate when (N sub c)/(N sub gamma) has unit value. The techniques used in practice are reviewed and the theory examined in some detail to show how valid measures can be achieved experimentally. Since least squares data fitting plays an important role in the extrapolation procedure, methods are outlined which currently appear to be essentially free of major ambiguities. (Author)
