Abstract : The study seeks answer to new questions concerning the preventive aspects of dental caries and periodontal disease by use of clinical and biophysical procedures. Specific objectives were as follows: Determine the role of Streptoccus mutans in the subclinical stage of carious lesions; determine any distinguishing morphological characteristics of S. mutans in order to identify its variants, S. sanguis, S. salivarius and S. fecalis; determine morphological and chemical properties of caries susceptible areas in tooth structure; and study the periodontal characteristics of the calculus-tooth structure interface and the adjacent gingival tissues.
