Abstract : PBI (polybenzimidazole) was dyed with disperse, cationic, acid, premetallized acid, fiber reactive, solubilized vat, and direct dye classes from pure solvents or aqueous emulsions. Most dyeclasses afforded good wash and dryclean fastness. Some dyes from each class offer better lightfastness and actually protect the PBI. Other dyes are destroyed by room lighting. Disperse dye diffusion, PBI absorbtion, Discoloration of PBI, PBI light stability, and the lightening effect of plasma was studied. Fifty pounds of PBI staple were dyed with acid dyes to two blue and three green shades. The fabrics were delivered to the Air Force for their evaluation.
