Abstract : An analysis of wedge and grating transducers for elastic surface waves is presented based on viewing the transducer as a surface-wave detector. The analysis is then used to find the design criteria and operating characteristics, such as efficiency and band-width, of grating transducers for Rayleigh waves. When operating as a detector, the surface wave incident on the portion of the substrate covered by the wedge or grating is converted into a leaky wave that radiates one or more beams into the wedge or substrate, one of which is detected by a bulk-wave transducer. Besides giving insight into the operation of these transducers, the analysis based on the detector point of view is valid for cases, such as the Rayleigh-wave grating transducer, where more than one radiated beam is present. The design and operating characteristics of grating transducers are determined. (Modified author abstract)
