Abstract : A study was made to determine a feasible method for removing pelletized nitrocellulose (PNC) fines from the PNC manufacturing process separation system filtrate purge. Fines removal is necessary to eliminate a source of environmental pollution and to reduce product losses. Laboratory experiments demonstrated that conventional pressure filtration, and also sand filtration, would be unsatisfactory. Pilot plant scale tests performed with a special high turbulence continuous filter were successful. Tests with a disc bowl cintrifuge also were successful. It is recommended that a modern solids ejecting disc bowl cintrifugal clarifier be installed for filtrate treatment because of its lower cost, intrinsic safety, and high effectiveness. (Author)
