Abstract : A series of basic research programs of fundamental application to hypersonic and supersonic flight made use of a series of unique hypersonic facilities, including several helium and nitrogen hypersonic wind tunnels covering a range of Mach numbers from about 8 to 25 and simulated altitude conditions up to 350,000 feet. These facilities were supplemented by a newly developed capability to study supersonic flows at the very high Reynolds numbers of full scale flight. The research program was both theoretical and experimental and initially concentrated on hypersonic flows and laminar boundary layers. (Modified author abstract)
