Abstract : A relatively inexpensive system has been developed for obtaining both trajectory and telemetry data (Tratel system) from sounding rockets launched at remote sites where radar sets and telemetry trackers are not available. Telemetry data and azimuth and elevation data are obtained using a Scientific-Atlanta tracking pedestal. Slant range is obtained using a Pseudo-noise (PN) ranging system developed by Motorola, Inc., as part of their Advanced Meteorological Sounding System (AMSS). An X, Y, Z trajectory is derived from the azimuth - elevation angles and a slant range. The AMSS ranging system was tested on two rockets and another rocket was used to test both telemetry reception and trajectory determination of the Tratel I system. These tests show excellent results for the PN ranging system and the Tratel I system. (Author)
