Abstract : The search for high energy density batteries is proceeding along several paths, of which one is the organic electrolyte system. Some studies associated with attaining the optimum electrolyte are discussed. Two organic electrolytes, solutions of lithium perchlorate in 4-butyrolactone or methyl acetate, were examined. Conductivity and viscosity values were determined and compared. The electrochemical behavior of the electrolytes was investigated in lithium/organic electrolyte/carbon monofluoride depolarizer cells. Polarization and galvanostatic discharge characteristics are presented, and the energy content values compared for cells containing the organic electrolytes. Problems encountered with the use of the electrolytes are discussed. (Author)
