Abstract : Human and dog red cells stored for six weeks in high concentrations of adenine equivalent to 25 or 50 mg/kg body weight were found to show decreased pH, P50, and diphosphoglycerate (DPG) levels comparable to other studies. A decrease in adenosine triphosphates (ATP) with storage was observed; however, there was a higher level with greater adenine doses indicating support of the ATP level by the adenine. No signs of toxic effects from the high adenine doses were observed. (Author)
