Abstract : Measurements from a tripartite borehole tiltmeter array in Bedford, Massachusetts indicate a high degree of intra-instrument consistency in amplitude and phase. The observed tides agree within 30% in amplitude and 3 degree orientation with those predicted from simple crustal models. Refinement of the crustal model and better knowledge of the offshore tidal distribution should bring the observations and theory into line. Other studies indicate tiltmeter performance is improved by suspending the instrument from a point near the top rather than resting the instrument on the bottom of the hole or on a platform. Further research to define the role of local elastic nonuniformities in perturbing crustal tilts is required. (Author)
