Abstract : The project involved the design and testing of a transmitter suitable for use as a source of radiation in connection with data related to the analysis of a 2200 to 2300 MHz (S-band) tracking system. The basic requirements were; capability of launch via small balloon, low cost, 2-3 hour operation time, approximately 50 mw output, tunability over the frequency range of 2200 to 2300 MHz, and relatively stable operation with relation to environment. The design related to this transmitter required review and analysis of information relating to the specific transistor chosen as well as information on types of capacitors usable at the frequencies involved. The prescribed requirements were met by the design herein presented. In addition to the basic frequency requirement, the unit could also quite easily be tuned to operate in the 1435 to 1535 MHz region or the standard 1680 MHz radiosonde frequency, thus extending the versatility of the transmitter to use with either tracker systems.
