Abstract : The report covers investigations of the problems of noise as related to devices and/or circuits and the design of noise reduction circuits. Two methods are described for coping with noise pulses associated with detector post amplifiers. One approach is to gate off the post amplifier. The other approach involves elimination of the noise pulse using a cancellation technique. An improved gating circuit, over that using MOS-FET's, uses Operational Transconductance Amplifiers, OTA's. Analog delays for processing purposes use MFD active filters having low sensitivity factors for passive components. An optical signal and random noise source was designed for noise-signal simulation. The 'edge' effect associated with Schottky-Barrier diodes was investigated and a phenomenological theory proposed by planar theory. Included is a brief study of the effects of radiation on IMPATT diode characteristics. (Author)
