Abstract : Microelectrophysiological studies have been made on the resting, action and endplate potentials of fibers from fast and slow muscles (m. plantaris and m. soleus) of rats. Both muscles included a whole spectrum of fibers which vary greatly in their biopotentials. However, m. plantaris consists predominantly of fast fibers with higher average values of resting potential level, and higher amplitude of action and end-plate potentials, duration of the latter being shorter as compared to that in fibers from m. soleus in which approximately half of the fibers exhibits lower and slower potentials. It is suggested that mechanisms of potentials in fast and slow fibers are qualitatively the same, quantitative differences between the potentials resulting from variations in intracellular potassium and sodium.
