Abstract : An investigation of the propagation of plane harmonic elastic waves in composite materials that are reinforced with straight bi-directional fibers is presented. The fibers were assumed to be extensible as well as inextensible. Expressions are given for slowness surfaces, group velocities, energy fluxes, stresses and displacements. All these quantities are related to the material properties, fiber direction and the direction of propagation. Several reflection-refraction problems are solved and discussed. In those problems we considered two semi-infinite media bonded at a plane interface. Those media are identical in all respects except for fiber directions. It is shown that changes in fiber directions have a crucial influence on the forward progress of the wave energy. The nature of the singularity, associated with the assumption of fiber inextensibility, is investi-gated by taking a limiting process of the extensible case. (Author-PL)
