Abstract : An investigation of the effectiveness of filtering MIL-T-25524, Grade JP-TS and MIL-T-38219, Grade JP-7 fuels through attapulgus clay in order to improve thermal stability is described. A test apparatus was constructed on which drum quantities of the fuels could be filtered through a single cartridge containing approximately 15 pounds of clay. The removal of contaminants, added metals, and desired additives was studied. Experiments showed that 400-500 gallons of fuel could be filtered through a single cartridge, depending upon the type of contaminant. It is significant that, though saturated with respect to one or more components, the clay continued to remove low levels of polar metal compounds from the fuel. Recommendations for scale-up of the laboratory unit to a portable field unit were made. (Modified author abstract)
