Abstract : A program to determine the practicality of fabricating and driving plasma display tubes possessing 1024x1024 (1,048,576) individually addressable elements has been completed. Primary emphasis was given to a study of the processing trade-offs between panel designs of different sizes with line densities from 60 to 100 lines per inch. Analysis of relative difficulties associated with the fabrication of larger panels versus the maintenance of tighter dimensional tolerances required to achieve successful electro/optical operation at higher resolution led to a choice of 83 lines per inch (lines on 12 mil centers) as the most suitable compromise. Processes to produce plasma display tubes with 1024x1024 lines in an active area of 12 1/4 x 12 1/4 inches were developed. Several panels of this size were fabricated and evaluated.
