Abstract : The study was undertaken to establish the explosion hazard classification that should be assigned to the drowning tank material that accumulates in the TNT manufacturing processes used in this country. Nitrobody samples of drowning tank material were obtained from both a batch and a continuous process, analyzed by gas chromotography to characterize them with respect to composition, and tested in a series of explosion hazard evaluation tests in accordance with Technical Bulletin 700-2, 'Explosives Hazard Classification Procedures', 19 May 1967. In addition to the required tests (Detonation, Ignition and Unconfined Burning, Thermal Stability, Impact Sensitivity, and Card Gap) - Water Gap and Detonation Velocity tests were performed. Explosion hazard classifications for the drowning tank material were recommended. (Author)
