Abstract : Recent morphological research has indicated that a number of amorphous polymers consist of small, liquid-crystal-like domains. Annealing below Tg can cause a change in size of the ca. 100A diameter domains and their internal order. These results and related evidence for local order in polymer melts and solutions are reviewed, followed by consideration of the effect of the domain structure on the physical properties of a specific polymer, polycarbonate, and the relationship of this structure to the concept of free volume.
