Abstract : The purpose of the project was to study welding of electroslag remelted (ESR) steel with high strength filler wires. This report gives a detailed description of welding techniques developed, and a metallurgical and ballistic evaluation of the welds obtained. ESR steel armor at hardnesses suitable for armor piercing projectile protection (514 BHN) was successfully welded. The welds have excellent mechanical and ballistic properties. Welding of ESR 4340 steel with the gas metal-arc welding (GMAW) process, using type 14C welding wire and argon-oxygen (98-2) shield gas, appears to offer no unusual welding problems. Normal good shop practices, using the tempering weld pass technique, will result in welds of high quality. (Author)
