Abstract : Infrared spectral reflectance measurements were made of N2, O2, CO2, H2O, NH3 and N2/NH3 cryodeposits on low scatter nickel-coated mirrors. Deposits were produced with a molecular beam to simulate contamination of sensor optics at high altitudes. Infrared optical constants, visible refractive indices and average deposit densities were explicitly obtained for all species. In general, the deposits could be characterized as homogeneous specular films of uniform thickness and with optical constants only occasionally dependent on deposition conditions. Using this physical model and these optical constants, excellent agreement was obtained between theoretical reflectance calculations and the experimental spectra for deposits thinner than 5 micrometers. In some cases, films fragmented or crystallized into diffusely reflecting deposits. Conditions under which this phenomenon occurred are also considered. (Modified author abstract)
