Abstract : The propagation and structure of strong shock waves in xenon have been studied under conditions where radiative transfer effects are important. Experiments carried out have included measurements of incident shock wave velocity, time-resolved spectra, broadband post-shock visible radiation, and post-incident and reflected shock wave temperature time history. These experiments have been supported by theoretical thermodynamic, radiative, and shock structure calculations. (Author)
